What Is Tajweed and Why Does It Matter?

Tajweed (تجويد) is the set of phonetic and recitation rules that govern how the Quran is to be read. The word itself comes from the Arabic root meaning “to make better” or “to perfect.” Applying Tajweed means giving each letter its rightful sound and its due characteristics — the elongations, nasalization, pauses, and assimilations that transform reading into recitation.

Allah (SWT) says in the Quran:

“And recite the Quran with measured recitation.” (Al-Muzzammil: 4)

This verse is often cited by scholars as a direct command to apply Tajweed. Without it, mispronunciation can alter the meaning of words and, in some cases, invalidate the prayer.
